Saving Face (Movie)

Here is a positive representation of Asian lesbians. This movie takes on different issues in the Chinese-American community including pregnancy outside of marriage, lesbianism, and societal and family expectations. This movie explored the mother-daughter relationship in Chinese families. The characters dealt with the problems that any Asian child would face, and perhaps even non-Asian children. For the most part, we want to make our parents proud. We don't want to disappoint them. And what most closeted gay person battle with, the fear of rejection, judgment, and prejudice by those around them, especially those closest to them, the ones they love and value, when and if they do decide to come out.

Desi Ad & Swordsman (Movie)

The woman in the center of image is facing forward, and she looks like she's tough and confident. She is standing with the boys. She is not a passive background for the guys pleasure. The guys in the picture are not even looking at her, so she is not objectified.

The Swordsman (1990)

Here is an old Chinese movie with an odd plot. The main character is a man named Asia, but the character was played by a female actress. In the movie, Asia is a master martial artist who discovered the secret to endless power and strength as well as eternal youth, but to acquire the power, he will become a woman. Basically, the more powerful he becomes, the more he becomes a woman and loose all his manhood.

Here is a movie that is unlike other movies out there. The main character, a man, had to became a woman to become more powerful and influencial to his followers. To maintain his position and remain in power, he has to transform himself into a woman. As a woman, Asia is beautiful, powerful, strong, and invinsible. There are also plenty of homosexual hints in the movie because Asia has all these women serving "her" and trying to gain his affection. At the same time, female Asia has fallen for his rival/enemy who happens to be a man. Throughout the whole movie, there are plenty of hints that Asia could in fact be bisexual because he has affections for both men and women.

Lucy Liu in Ally McBeal

Her character is an accomplished lawyer who is confident and strong. Her character is not necessary a positive one because she takes advantage of other people, but being Asian and strong and influential is not a common role for Asian women in TV or movies.
